TAKE A LOAD OFF
You may not realize how stressful homeownership is, until you make the best move of your life.
“I feel personally like somebody took a giant load off of my back. I loved where I lived and it was beautiful. But as our neighbor said to us, ‘You moved from Paradise to Nirvana.’ That is how I feel.” – Dave Bell, resident of Legacy at Fairways
MEET CHRIS AND DAVE BELL, WHO SOLD THEIR BELOVED LAKE HOUSE IN GREECE, NY AND STARTED THRIVING IN UNEXPECTED WAYS WITH THEIR NEW CAREFREE LIFESTYLE AT LEGACY AT FAIRWAYS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Chris and Dave Bell on Friday, February 16th, 2018. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
With four children between them and seven of their eight grandchildren living in the Rochester area, Chris and Dave feel very lucky. After their first retirement as educators, they devoted ten years to helping take care of their grandchildren. While they thoroughly enjoyed their dream home on Lake Ontario, Dave dreaded maintenance and repairs. After two years of examining alternatives to own, build or rent throughout Rochester, they fell in love with their three-bedroom rental villa at Legacy at Fairways. Excited about its generous size, location, views and proximity to family and Champion Hills Golf Club, leaving their lake home was easier than they imagined. Relieved of homeowner responsibilities, they’re busy enjoying new friendships, Dave is playing a ton of golf and Chris is astounded by how much she’s enjoying the classes and amenities.
DISCOVER YOUR OWN NIRVANA
Many people insist they adore their home and never want to leave it, but let’s be honest, homeownership has its headaches. The chores don’t get any easier with age and neither does moving. As Chris and Dave Bell discovered, today’s retirement living options are varied and worth exploring. They feel like they moved from Paradise to Nirvana and you can, too. Exploring your alternatives could take a while, so join us for our Discovery Luncheon as a first step and let us save you some valuable time. “I guess ‘it’s never too early,’ would be my advice and to, number one, start getting your house in order now because moving is a huge thing. But once it’s done, it’s done. …I swear, every night we say, ‘We did the right thing. We did the right thing.’” – Chris Bell, resident of Legacy at Fairways
RESPONSIBLE, SENSIBLE, COMFORTABLE AND SAFE
Keen sensibilities prompted Chris and Dave to act when they did, preempting future worries for themselves and their loved ones. “Well, we see a lot of people our age that ‘stay too long on the farm’ is the phrase I’ve always used; it’s an expression I’m sure you’ve heard, where people are in their homes and they are not able to properly maintain them anymore and it is not safe for them at their age. My wife and I did not want to be those people. We wanted to be people that were responsible and moved along in our life in a fashion that was more sensible, more comfortable and safe.” – Dave Bell
ECONOMICAL, FRIEND-FILLED, FUN AND CONVENIENT
Dave meticulously compared costs of every alternative, determining that Legacy at Fairways offered the best dollar value. Their maintenance-free villa has plenty of room for grandchildren to sleepover and it’s senior friendly, too, a bonus when Chris’ 96-year-old mother visits. They’re always enjoying wine parties and dinners with the wonderful friends they’ve made and Dave can just walk out the door to play golf. “The convenience of having Champion Hills Golf Club here has been absolutely a highlight for me. I think I’ve played 50 rounds of golf since I came here in August.” – Dave Bell
